Our legacy of delivering a spectrum of content reflecting the current and changing face of the world and our communities begins

In June 1939, our US TV network NBC aired The Ethel Waters Show, a variety special featuring the first African American to star in her own TV show. Since then our ground-breaking film and TV shows have led the way in representing and championing our diverse communities, from Will and Grace to We are Lady Parts, Fast and Furious to Get Out.

Chief Diversity Officer appointed, reporting to CEO

Our Chief Diversity Officer, Craig Robinson, in partnership with the company’s business leaders, works to define and build a culture that embraces and values diversity in its workforce, culture, content and perspectives. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is at the centre of everything we do and our DEI teams in New York, London and across the world work closely across our businesses and with our Employee Resource Groups, including our Black Employee Network and Represent (multi-cultural network) to drive a positive culture where everyone can belong. Our groups help to ensure we attract, retain and develop a diverse employee base representative of our communities.

Early Careers programmes launched exclusively for under-represented groups

Our internship scheme now offers specific roles for the exceptional talent of our Prince’s Trust Get Started in Media programme and London Screen Academy alumni, providing a new route into Film and TV, particularly for those from communities who don’t easily have access to the media industry. Six Prince’s Trust candidates joined our 2021 intern programme in July with our next Get Started programme scheduled for September this year.

Expand our Employee Resource Group Footprint

In addition to existing Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) in London, Singapore and Sydney, we’re expanding our coverage with new groups (including the Black Employee Network) in Brazil and Mexico launching in August 2021 with further groups planned across Europe and Asia Pacific. These new ERGs help us attract, develop and advance employees from diverse backgrounds, and ensure our businesses and our employees effectively represent and support those communities; delivering a programme of events promoting allyship, celebrating different cultures and building awareness.

Building our Mentorship Momentum

Building on existing programmes including those supporting early-in-career employees and alumni of our Prince’s Trust Get Started in Media programmes, our UK Black Employee Network will shortly launch their own mentorship scheme for employees of Black heritage, geared towards tackling the specific challenges that Black employees face in the workplace and providing access to more senior leaders so that members can envision themselves in leadership positions and have a clearer understanding of how they can get there.
